The Knicks are 1.5 games out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, but they’ve reportedly targeted the player to get them over the hump.

New York is one of the teams that’s discussed a possible trade with the Hawks for Jeff Teague, per CBS New York. The all-star guard -- who is averaging 14.3 points and 5.6 assists per game -- would serve as an upgrade over a Jose Calderon.

Kristaps Porzingis Should Start Over Carmelo Anthony In All-Star Game

The 34-year-old, by comparison, is averaging just 7.5 points and four assists per game.

This isn’t the first time the Knicks considered trading for Teague. It’s been almost 12 months since GM Steve Mills was looking to upgrade the PG position.

“There’s no question that the Knicks want to upgrade that position,” one Eastern Conference said in Feb. 2015, per CBS New York. “That’s their top goal.”

Kristaps Porzingis Smart To Avoid Endorsements

En route to a 17-65 season, it made little sense for the Knicks to do so. A surprising 22-25 start to the 2015-16 campaign, however, adds an extra incentive to New York’s front office.

If a competent PG is the missing piece of a playoff puzzle, there’s no reason not to pursue it. Even if he’ll cost $8 million in 2016-17.

The Knicks just need to put together a tradable package first.
