The Dolphins made a mistake signing Ndamukong Suh to a $114 million contract in 2015. They'll make an even bigger mistake paying him his full base salary in 2016.

With his $25.5 million signing bonus out of the way, Suh's hit against the cap balloons from $985,000 to $28.6 million this year according to ESPN's Roster Management System, per ESPN. That's a huge chunk for a team in desperate need of CB, G, OT and ILB help this offseason.

Players Dolphins Must Cut To Succeed In 2016

Coupled with Ryan Tannehill's new contract -- the QB is due $11.6 million -- Miami's two most expensive players will account for roughly 28 percent of the salary cap.

As if competing against Tom Brady and the Patriots on a year-in, year-out basis wasn't bad enough, the Dolphins will attempt to do so cap-strapped in 2016.

Vice president Mike Tannenbaum is already looking for creative ways to mitigate that.

"By the time we get to the first day of the league year, we should have plenty of room to address the needs that we have," Tannenbaum said confidently Tuesday at the Senior Bowl. "Certainly we will be looking at Suh's contract."

Suh's base salary is the first variable worth dissecting.

Turning a majority of his base salary into a bonus isn't only a player-friendly decision, it's a necessary one.

You're not competing against Brady and Bill Belichick without addressing needs in the offseason.
