Roger Federer couldn't help but get lost in his emotions when watching the Australian Open, but perhaps it's Maria Sharapova who should be cheering him on.

Federer watched on fervently as Sharapova took on Lauren Davis in a third-round match, and was particularly enchanted by a 27-stroke rally between the two ladies. Davis lost that one thanks to an unforced error, but eventually imposed a third set before No. 5 Sharapova won 6-1, 6-7, 6-0.

The crazy rally drew excitement from Federer who jumped out of his seat. He then took this motivation out onto the court for his match against Sharapova's ex-boyfriend, Grigor Dimitrov.

The Swiss sensation took care of Dimitrov, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in third-round action, advancing to a Round 4 match against David Goffin. Sharapova, meanwhile, will do battle with Belinda Bencic in the fourth round.

Grigor Dimitrov Into Pussycat Doll

While Federer was excited to see Sharapova win, perhaps she should have been rooting for him against her ex. The tennis star dated Dimitrov for two years before they split last July. Then again, judging by Dimitrov's comments shortly after the breakup, maybe they're still on good terms.

"Our paths split," he told Reuters. "We experienced wonderful moments together. I wish her much happiness and success in life and in tennis. Now I'm concentrated entirely on the game and I'm sure the results will soon be seen."

Unfortunately for him, those results meant a third-round loss at the Australian Open.
