The NHL just had a minor crisis regarding its All-Star Game, after little-known enforcer John Scott was ironically voted as a captain by the fans, and then was traded from the Coyotes to the Canadiens, which initially looked like it would knock him out of the All-Star spot because he changed conferences.
The NBA has narrowly avoided its own embarrassing All-Star vote. Mavericks center Zaza Pachulia, a reserve who is also known for playing rough, barely missed the cut to be a starter for the Western Conference. Look at the names now above him to digest what a farce that would’ve been.

Kobe Bryant hasn’t earned his spot based on his play this year, but All-Star games are acceptable forums for lifetime achievement awards. Kevin Durant and Kawhi Leonard are two of the NBA’s best overall, two-way players.
Pachulia is actually having a very good season. He’s averaging a double-double – 10.5 points and a career-high 10.8 rebounds – but his numbers pale in comparison to the likes of Leonard, Durant, and centers in the West like DeMarcus Cousins. He’s also playing 29 minutes a night, while other potential choices are shouldering bigger loads. The NBA wants to showcase star players, and Pachulia is not one of them.

He’s had a good sense of humor about the voting scare fans threw into commissioner Adam Silver, and said he doesn’t truly care if he makes the cut.
Zaza Pachulia is giddy about almost being voted an All-Star: "I feel loved. That’s more important to me than being an All-Star, honestly."
