The 49ers sure are creative with how they find their talent. San Francisco scours the globe for unorthodox skill players, and just landed a star receiver from the Canadian Football League named Eric Rogers. He joins Jarryd Hayne, an Australian rugby standout for the Parramatta Eels.
Rogers played for the Calgary Stampeders in 2015, catching 87 passes for 1,448 yards and 10 touchdowns. He’s a big target, standing 6’4 and weighing 215 pounds, and he’s not new to American football. Rogers played Division III football at California Lutheran, and had a stint in the Arena Football League before breaking out in Canada. He had offers from 13 NFL teams, and will be guaranteed $300,000 from the Niners, according to ESPN.
49ers Picked Chip Kelly Because They Want Colin Kaepernick To Work
Hayne was inked to a two-year deal worth $1.5 million last year, but he had little effect on the field for the 49ers in 2015. He played in just eight games, his best week coming in Week 16 vs. the Lions in which he rushed for 27 yards on nine carries, and caught 5-of-6 passes for 20 additional yards. He also had some impressive punt returns during the preseason.

Rogers will have a chance to compete for a prominent role in the 49ers offense next season. Aside from Torrey Smith, there are no established names that will be clearly ahead of him, unless they bring back 35-year-old Anquan Boldin. Bruce Ellington and Quinton Patton are the names to watch, but they only combined for 547 yards.
