Despite his best efforts to avoid it, Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh's wallet will be getting a lot lighter after the NFL upheld its decision to fine him a record and unprecedented $100,000 for his low block that blindsided Minnesota Vikings center John Sullivan in Week 1 during Detroit's 34-24 victory.
Suh was given the largest on-the-field fine in league history after the Lions intercepted the ball and Suh nailed Sullivan's knees from behind on Sept. 8 at Ford Field in Detroit. Suh, a repeat offender, drew the ire of Roger Goodell who has decided to start making examples out of repeat offenders and then put the unprecedented levy down on Suh. Suh appealed the fine, and after a few weeks of waiting it was announced that the fine was upheld by the league, according to USA Today Sports.
Suh's agent Roosevelt Barnes told The Associated Press that the arbitrator ruled in favor of the league so the punishment was going to stand.
Though Suh has been fined six times for a total of $342,794 and has been suspended by the league for two games in the past, the 6-foot-4 307-lb. defensive tackle insists he won't change his style of play even if it has gotten him into trouble repeatedly by league officials.
"My play speaks for itself," Suh said after he was fined per USA Today Sports. "I don't change. I'm going to always play tough, hard. That's the way I was brought up at Nebraska, where I really learned football from the (Bo) Pelinis and that staff, and I'm going to continue to play hard, play blue-collar football."
Suh has been perceived by some to be a dirty player due to his hard-hitting reputation and the number of fines that have been piled on against him over the years and his reputation has certainly taken a hit, though it doesn't appear as though Suh will be changing the way he approaches the game any time soon. While he's seen by some as a dirty player, he is also one of the most talked about and feared tackles in the game.
The Lions (4-2) topped the Cleveland Browns 31-17 on Sunday and Suh recorded one tackle and has had a torrid defensive year with 2.5 sacks and 15 tackles this season.
