At 1:00 p.m. the Minnesota Vikings (1-3) will host the Carolina Panthers (1-3) in a game that will be played with heavy hearts, and the thought of Vikings running back Adrian Peterson's slain two-year-old son on everyone's mind. News broke last this week about Peterson's presence in South Dakota dealing with a "tragic" family emergency. It was later revealed that his two-year-old son, still unnamed, was beaten by the mother's boyfriend and rushed to a hospital in critical condition. Doctors later removed him from life support.

Peterson returned to practice Friday and vowed to play while asking reporters to respect his privacy during this heart-wrenching time. "Football is something I will always fall back on," he said. "It gets me through tough times. Just being around the guys in here, that's what I need in my life, guys supporting me, and just being able to go out and play this game I love."

The Vikings picked up Buccaneers castoff Josh Freeman this week as competition at quarterback, although Matt Cassel will start this week. "One thing you can expect in the NFL: expect the unexpected," Cassel said. "Because every week it changes. You never know what's going to happen. I learned that over time. This is my ninth year now."

Meanwhile Panthers quarterback Cam Newton's up-and-down play has reflected in Carolina's uneven performances this season. "I think it's more on my behalf that I have to focus in and hone in on my skills and say 'Look, let me focus more in the second half and get the job done," Newton said.
