Deron Williams, the star point guard of the Brooklyn Nets that retooled in the offseason in hopes of challenging for an NBA title, may miss the start of the regular season due to a sprained right ankle, said his coach Jason Kidd.

ESPN.com is reporting that Kidd indicated the possibility of his star point guard missing the first few games of the Nets in order to rehabilitate a sprained right ankle that he hurt during an offseason workout in Utah.

"This is going to be a question that we're probably going to have to deal with every day until he does get the green light to go," Kidd told ESPN.com. "But we're not rushing him. So if we have to start the season with him still trying to get better, I think we all feel comfortable, but we would feel a little bit more comfortable if he was starting."

The coach said his point guard's status is day to day. Williams took part in shooting drills with the team as it prepared for a preseason game against the Detroit Pistons on Saturday.

Earlier, Williams told ESPN that he was likely to miss the next three preseason games of the team due to the injury. He had missed the first preseason game of the Nets in Washington. He said his goal is to play in the regular season opener in Cleveland on October 30.

Williams' health is a top concern for the Nets as he is expected to lead the team deep in the playoffs. The Nets acquired two future Hall of Famers in Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce from the Boston Celtics to complement Williams and All-Star center Brook Lopez.
