Amid a week full of speculation, Cam Newton has confirmed he's a father.
After the Panthers lost their first game of the season, 20-13, to the Falcons, there was a lot of speculation that off-field distractions may have led to Newton's poor performance. There were rumors that the Carolina quarterback and his girlfriend, who goes by Kia on Instagram, had a child.
Cam Newton Denies Baby-Rocking Celebration Having Any Meaning
Newton took to Twitter on Wednesday to confirm that the couple welcomed their first child into the world over the Christmas holiday.
The signal caller was hesitant about breaking the good news because he didn't want to distract his teammates, according to TMZ. Perhaps his hesitation was justified, because it seems there may be reason to believe the off-field distraction of having a baby could have led to the bid for a perfect season crumbling.
My longtime girlfriend and I were extremely blessed to have a son last week. Our family is excited and thank you all for the well wishes!

The Panthers (14-1) looked terrible on Sunday and Newton didn't throw for a single touchdown pass. He did reach the end zone on an eight-yard run, and he downplayed a baby-rocking celebration afterward, which started all of the speculation.
Newton was very upset at the Panthers' performance after the game.
"We got our ass kicked today, and to a lot of degree, we deserved it, especially the type of way we played," he said, per NFL.com. "Offensively, defensively and special teams. And I'm talking with the mirror in front of my face. There were some plays that we left out there, we knew it."
The Panthers have clinched a first-round bye, but are still contending with the Cardinals (13-2) for home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.
While Newton can celebrate parenthood by dabbing, the timing of his first son's birth, though miraculous, was unfortunate.
