Fortunately for Stan Kroenke, he needs the backing of 75 percent of the NFL's owners to relocate the Rams to Los Angeles, not the backing of the NFL itself.

Unfortunately for Kroenke, owner of the current St. Louis franchise, the NFL is making it clear that it doesn't want the Rams to move and may use its influence to convince enough owners to vote against the move.

The NFL pledged to add $100 million toward construction of a new riverfront stadium in St. Louis, bringing the total investment by the city to $1.01 billion for a new stadium for the Rams, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

"But the extra cash comes with a local cost: Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon's stadium task force has agreed to rebate city ticket taxes back to the team -- a tax projected to produce more than $3 million a year," The Post-Dispatch added.

The NFL's total commitment would be $300 million.

The irony of the NFL's help is that it is the one, along with the owners, that had asked city officials to firm its funding package for the Rams by the end of the year.

Kroenke is set on relocating the Rams to Inglewood, Calif, with a $2 billion plan for a new stadium. The Chargers and Raiders also are proposing a plan for a stadium in Carson, Calif., that the two would share, for about $1.7 billion.

The St. Louis deal still has obstacles, according to The Post-Dispatch. The late additions to the plan, cobbled by the city's Board of Aldermen, were met with skepticism by some on the board.

"Were we elected to write checks to the NFL without understanding what we are doing?" Alderman Scott Ogilvie asked.

Alderman Tom Villa said: "This whole thing has been orchestrated from on high, and it just doesn't pass the common sense test. They've made us pigskin piñatas."

And Missouri state legislators have sued Nixon to keep him from issuing the bonds for the stadium, according to The Post-Dispatch.
