The Los Angeles Lakers have unveiled a new black alternate jersey that will be used during select "Hollywood Nights," but the team was quick to dismiss rumors that the franchise will be doing away with the traditional purple and gold colors.

SI.com reports that the front of the jersey shows the word "Lakers" while the jersey number is colored purple with gold trim. The back shows the name of the player in block purple letters. The same website describes the jersey as having purple and gold trim that runs down to the sides.

"This has been a few years in the process of introducing a black Lakers uniform," Lakers executive Jeanie Buss said in a clip posted in the team's official website, Lakers.com. "In no way will it ever replace the purple and gold traditional uniform that have seen so many championships won. I think the gold is going to pop out on a black uniform and having the purple letters says it all."

Buss said the new jersey represents Hollywood as a town of really hardworking people. "That's the major industry of this city and it's the heartbeat. Hollywood Nights is a tribute to all those people," she said.

The new Lakers jersey is part of the NBA's city pride series. Other NBA teams like the Detroit Pistons with its "Motor City" uniforms and the Portland Trail Blazers with their "Rip City" uniforms are also following suit.

The Lakers are set to open training camp for the upcoming season on September 28.
