NFL Trade Rumors: Niners' Davis And Kaepernick Being Shopped Before Deadline?

With the NFL Trade Deadline fast approaching, the San Francisco 49ers are rumored to have tight end Vernon Davis on the trading block before his contract expires at the end of the year.

Davis joins QB Colin Kaepernick on the block, where he's reportedly been since before the season even began.

Davis said while he has not spoken with general manager Trent Baalke about the possibility of being traded, he has discussed it with his agent.

"It's a possibility; you know there's nothing I can do about it," said Davis, 31. " ... I'm a positive believer. I believe everything works its way out for the good for those who are good people. But I'm always prepared for anything. Nothing new surprises me."

Baalke said he hasn't received a lot of trade offers but that discussion typically "heats up on the eve of the trade deadline."

Davis is still considered a top tight end and has the ability to get open, but still he has not caught a touchdown pass since Week 1 of last season. This year he only has 18 receptions for 194 yards in six games so far. He did have six catches for 24 yards in Sunday's blowout loss to the St. Louis Rams.

The Niners, at 2-6, are in last place in the NFC West.  They still have meetings left with first-place Arizona (Nov. 29) and the undefeated Bengals (Dec. 20) to contend with as well.

As mentioned above, the 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick also has been rumored to be on his way out before the start of the season, according to ESPN

"...the 49ers might still be tempted to trade Kaepernick to a quarterback-starved franchise for two or three high draft choices, if they found the right deal. They could then look to find a way to come away with a top quarterback prospect in the draft, while retooling other parts of the roster," John Clayton wrote back in June.

Kaepernick is currently in the first season of a six-year, $114 million contract. While no one within the Niners has said much about trading Kaepernick, many outsiders have suggested it's a move that makes sense in the long run for both parties.

Dieter Kurtenbach with KNBR out of San Francisco wrote a recent column saying that if the Niners were a competent organization they would trade their starting quarterback.

"It's been clear for weeks - even the so-called good weeks - that the fifth-year quarterback has regressed beyond the point of salvation inside of this 49ers offense. Sunday's 27-6 loss to the Rams was the latest, and perhaps saddest example of how far the team and its quarterback have fallen in the last year. Kaepernick has physical talents that rival the best players in the NFL, but playing quarterback is a mental game too. Kaepernick is in a mental funk - one that he might never get out of, and one that he certainly won't get out of in a 49ers uniform," he wrote.

Both Davis and Kaepernick have been considered leaders on the 49ers offense in recent years, but with the team struggling and not much hope for the playoffs in sight, both could be playing on different squads by the end of the week.
