Like all New Yorkers, Spike Lee all of a sudden has fond memories of being a Mets fan. The controversial director appeared on ESPN’s "Mike and Mike" to reveal some on Thursday.

Derek Jeter Is Finally Getting Married

“I grew up a Mets fan,” he said. “Let me tell you this, [in] 1969, I ran on the field with a thousand others three times. We won the eastern division, we beat the Braves and when Davey Johnson flying out to Cleon Jones in left field.

“So for two years, I had a big patch of outfield grass from Shea Stadium. My mother made me throw it out.”

Mets Add Secret Weapon For World Series

Apparently, his code of sports ethics went in the trash with it.

So the former Mets fan turned into a Yankees fan, but is now rooting for the Mets because they’re winning again.

Loyalty at its finest.

All that’s left to see is Spike Lee at the Bankers Life Fieldhouse rocking his Reggie Miller jersey after the Knicks finish 31-51.

True fans don’t root for another team simply because they reside in the same city. Those are the kind of local bragging rights fans cherish, especially New Yorkers.

At least the Yankees will always have Billy Crystal.
