“After much deliberation and talking with my friends, family, teammates and our coaching staff, I’ve decided to finally bring my soccer career to an end,” Wambach said in a statement, per USA Today. “While we still have more work to do for women’s soccer, after bringing the World Cup back to the United States this summer, I’m feeling extremely optimistic about the future of our sport.

“It’s been an amazing, wonderful ride and I can’t wait to see what the next chapter of my life brings.”

Fourteen years, 252 caps and 184 goals top her resume, but below are the best moments that defined her career.

2002 Friendly vs. Finland

It was the goal that started it all. Wambach opened her international account against Finland in 2002.

2012 Olympic Semifinals vs. Canada

It wasn’t a match-winner, but Wambach’s penalty in the 80th minute against Canada forced extra time in the 2012 Olympic semifinals. Alex Morgan would eventually secure the 4-3 win.

2011 World Cup Quarterfinal vs. Brazil

This wasn’t the first time Wambach tortured Brazil with a late header, but it was certainly the most dramatic. On the verge of elimination, a signature header in the 122nd minute gave the USWNT new life.

2009 Friendly vs. Canada

In her hometown of Rochester, NY, Wambach delivered her 100th international goal.

2004 Olympic Final vs. Brazil

After a disappointing end to the 2003 World Cup, Wambach and company bounced back to win gold at the 2004 Olympics. A header in the 112th minute gave the U.S. a 2-1 win.
