Edinson Volquez pitched Game 1 of the World Series shortly after his father passed away in the Dominican Republic. Many hours after Volquez was finished pitching, however, it’s still unclear if he was aware of his father’s death while he was on the mound.

Most media outlets are reporting he was informed after he’d been removed from the game, and Royals manager Ned Yost said Volquez’s family had asked that he not be told because they wanted him to focus on beating the Mets.

"We found out about an hour before, and we said, 'What do you want us to do?'" Yost said. "And the family said, 'We don't want you to tell him. We want him to pitch this game.' We said, 'If that's what you want, we'll do exactly what you want.'"

ESPN, however, is reporting that Volquez found out an hour before arriving to the stadium and crediting an unnamed source for the information. Meanwhile other outlets such as NBC, USA Today, and The New York Times all reported the opposite. The Times had more quotes from Yost describing what it was like to not tell Volquez about his dad’s passing.

The Mets Have A Secret Weapon

“It was very hard for me,” Yost said after the game. “There is no road map, but you do what the family asks you to do, and it was real special to them that Eddy goes out and pitches this game.”

ESPN either has secret knowledge up their sleeve, or they messed up badly and aren’t up to admitting it.
