The New York Yankees (78-68) and Baltimore Orioles (77-68) are not only divisional rivals, they are neck-and-neck with the Tampa Bay Rays, Cleveland Indians, and Kansas City Royals in the fight for a second wildcard spot in the American League playoffs. Live stream the game here; the Yankees radio broadcast can be heard on WCBS 880 AM, while Orioles fans can listen to the action on 1090 WBAL.
The Yankees won a tight game last night in Game 3 of the four-game set, pushing them ahead of Baltimore by a half game. Now, they will place their faith in embattled starter Phil Hughes (4-13, 5.11 ERA) to tame a home run happy lineup that counts Chris "Crush" Davis as a member. Davis is currently leading MLB in home runs with 49.
Hughes told the Yankees official team website that he isn't viewing this game as a chance to win back the fans he's lost with his poor performances, but rather viewing tonight as an opportunity to help the Yankees reach the postseason.
"I'm not really worried about redemption or proving anybody wrong or stuff like that," Hughes said. "I'm just trying to throw as many quality innings as I can."
Meanwhile the Orioles are tasked with processing their brutal come-from-ahead loss Wednesday night in time to save their own playoff hopes. "Tonight was a tough night for us, like last night, but these guys will turn the page and compete their rears off (Thursday)," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "Anybody that would want to close the door on us would be making a mistake."
They will turn to left-hander Wei-Yin Chen (7-7, 3.82 ERA) to earn the O's a split in this series. Chen has struggled against the Yankees this season, going 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA in two starts.
