Julius Randle may have played just 14 minutes in his rookie season but it seems that the sophomore forward has done enough to convince the Lakers to keep him until 2016-17.

The Lakers have reportedly picked up the third year option of Randle’s contract, meaning that his $3.3 million salary in 2016-17 will be guaranteed. He will be making $3.13 million for the coming season.

Randle had a forgetful season, suffering a broken leg right in his very first game as a pro in a Lakers uniform.

Before he was drafted in 2014, there were already concerns surrounding his broken right foot which many believed would require surgery. The issue on his foot was somehow forgotten, but his rookie year still turned out disastrous after suffering that broken tibia against the Rockets in the 2014-15 season opener.

Now a year after, it seems that Randle is as good as new and has been getting a lot of praises from his teammates and the Lakers coaching staff. He is expected to start at the power forward position and is considered one of the vital cogs for the success of the Lakers this season.

The young core of the Lakers will also include fellow sophomore Jordan Clarkson and incoming rookie D’Angelo Russell. The trio will be looked upon to provide the necessary for Kobe Bryant as well as other NBA vets on the team like Roy Hibbert and Lou Williams.
