Baseball is a fickle sport on a day-to-day basis, so on FanDuel it is always wise to take a sure thing when it presents itself. Despite Clayton Kershaw’s 5.12 postseason ERA, he’s still a safe bet to rack up strikeouts, get a win, and limit runs. The problem, is that he costs $12, 700, and the average cost is less than $4,000. Is Kershaw’s price tag too prohibitive to create a well-rounded roster?

No! Get creative, and try this in your Friday tournament.

Best NFL Bargains For Week 5 On FanDuel

SP: Clayton Kershaw, Dodgers ($12,700)

Ignore the poor postseason numbers. No pitcher has the lengthy track record of success like Kershaw, no pitcher struck out more hitters in 2015, and the Mets aren’t the Cardinals, who have been Kershaw’s primary tormentors.

C: Chris Gimenez, Rangers ($2,500)

He’s starting, and he’s in an offense that just scored five runs on the road in Toronto in a game started by David Price. Kershaw makes you find some really cheap players elsewhere, and catcher is not a dominant position anyway.

How Clayton Kershaw Will Rock The Mets To Sleep

1B: Michael Cuddyer, ($2,200)

Cuddyer will be playing left field tonight, and he hit .273 vs. left-handers this season. Cuddyer has some pop in his bat, and although Kershaw is a brutal matchup, it’s better to have the right-hander in. Even if Cuddyer can scrape out a single or two, that will keep pace with the pricier options.

2B: Ryan Goins, Blue Jays ($2,300)

Goins is cheap, and makes contact at a clip greater than 80 percent. He won’t offer power, but a stolen base isn’t out of the question, and he could score some runs being in baseball’s best lineup.

3B: Luis Valbuena, Astros ($3,000)

Go big or go home! Valbuena might hurt you with strikeouts, but Houston is facing a young starter in Marcus Stroman, so Valbuena’s 25-home run power may show up today. Stroman brings the heat, so if he misses his spots, Valbuena can certainly make him pay.

SS: Jhonny Peralta, Cardinals ($2,600)

The only other power threat at SS is Troy Tulowitzki, who is too pricy to pair with Kershaw. Peralta is a steady hand on a steady team, and he will likely get you a hit or two, or at the very least an RBI. Bonus: This lineup will leave you with $200 on the table. If that grinds your gears, swap out Peralta for Elvis Andrus (Rangers) and hope for steals, runs or both.

OF: Jose Bautista, Blue Jays ($4,400)

Finally, a star! Joey Bats and the Jays don’t want to drop two at home, and he has a flair for the dramatic. I’m calling a Bautista home run in this one, so you won’t want to miss out on that.

OF: Joc Pederson, Dodgers ($2,800)

Pederson’s playing time is spotty, but at these prices upside is king. Few players in baseball have as much raw power as Young Joc, so at less than $3,000, he has multi-home run potential if he starts. At worst, we’re likely to see him as a pinch hitter.

Chris Coghlan, Cubs ($2,300)

Look, I get it. Coghlan’s a boring pick. But he’s a solid player, and the Cubs have something special cooking. And you don’t have money for anything else. When Kershaw throws eight shutout innings with double-digit strikeouts, you’ll stop caring about how unexciting Coghlan is.
