MLB is in a tough spot. Budweiser is a major sponsor of the MLB playoffs, but their recent video giving two Yankees fans the “Budweiser Experience” was cool and cringe-worthy at the same time in light of CC Sabathia’s trip to rehab on account of an alcohol problem.

Two Yankees fans were gifted tickets to the Yanks’ Wild Card game vs. the Astros, and were able to take in batting practice while hanging with former relief pitcher Jeff Nelson. Then, they were treated to steaks and beers in the Yankees’ high-end, in-stadium steakhouse, where Tino Martinez cracked open some cold ones with them and had dinner.

This is all cool, but also pretty tone-deaf because of how much it’s glorifying alcohol, which caused their star pitcher to leave the team one day before the start of the postseason. Sabathia’s problem was reportedly so bad that last Friday he was reportedly drunk in the clubhouse and offering teammates sips from a cup containing a “brown liquid.”

ESPN reported he was “walking unsteadily,” uncharacteristically ignored reporters, and was “ushered” into a cab by another teammate. With all this going on, MLB might have thought twice about shamelessly shilling for a beer company, even if it did make two fans’ night.
