Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is nicknamed Superman, but he might have to give up the nickname to Dez Bryant. There are rumblings the Cowboys receiver, who suffered a Jones fracture in his foot during Dallas’ opener, might return by Week 7. Some early timetables had pegged him to miss 10-12 weeks.

Jones fractures are no joke. Former NBA MVP Kevin Durant had one during the preseason last year, and was limited to just 27 games of the Thunder’s 82-game schedule.

In football, ex-Giants, Titans and Colts receiver Hakeem Nicks suffered one after his second straight season of more than 1,000 yards receiving. He was never the same player after his fracture, and never got to 1,000 yards again. It seems unwise on the surface for Bryant to rush his recovery, but he has been on Twitter quite a bit teasing an early return.

The Cowboys are 1-2 since losing Bryant, but a Week 2 injury to QB Tony Romo may have skewed their results even further. Prior to his injury, Bryant had at least 88 catches, 1,200 yards, and 12 touchdowns in each of the previous three campaigns. Last year he set a career-high with 16 touchdowns.
