Eddie Lacy, star running back for the Packers, is currently one of the biggest headaches in fantasy leagues across the world. Lacy hurt his ankle Sunday night vs. the Seahawks, and is questionable for this week’s action.

The problem is that Lacy plays on Monday night, so his owners may be forced into a spot where they run the risk of being unable to replace him at that point, or starting someone inferior as a safety measure.

Then there are the folks with James Starks, a perennial yawner of a running back who is the definition of “handcuff.” Starks is essentially useless in fantasy most weeks, but whenever Lacy’s out, he instantly becomes a valuable starter.

How valuable?

On Sunday night vs. the Seahawks he rushed 20 times for 95 yards, and caught four passes for 11 yards. For his career he averages 4.3 yards per carry, and in the six games in which he’s gotten 15 or more carries, only once has he averaged fewer than four yards per attempt.

Starks would also benefit from playing with the NFL’s best quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, making the passing game the focal point of a defense. Starks can expect to see running lanes, and he can also contribute to the passing game.

Lacy returned to practice in a limited capacity Friday, but it’s no stretch to imagine Starks gets a good share of the work with Lacy banged up. Fantasy owners with both players should wait as close to game time as possible to make their decision. Owners with Lacy, and other option playing on Sunday, should roll the dice and trust Lacy will play. Starks owners—I hate to break it to you, but I think he’s a stay away in the seasonal setting.

Daily fantasy – Draft Kings and FanDuel – is where Starks is most interesting. Plan on Starks getting at least 12 carries this week, just as a means of preserving Lacy. Starks costs $6,500 on FanDuel, and a mouth-watering $3,000 on Draft Kings. Compared to Lacy’s $7,700 FanDuel price and $7,200 cost on Draft Kings, it’s almost a no-brainer.

In daily fantasy, specifically Draft Kings, Starks is a clear play. Even if he stinks you’re overall team should be loaded.
