Todd Gurley’s return to the gridiron is imminent, according to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, who said it would be an “upset” if the former Georgia standout wasn’t on the field in Week 3.

Gurley was the No. 10 overall pick in the draft despite sustaining a serious knee injury late in the college season in his first game back from a suspension. If Gurley is back in the mix, here’s how to handle the St. Louis backfield moving forward.

Todd Gurley

Gurley was drafted 10th despite a bad knee injury because he is a superior talent. Knee injuries are scary, but plenty of high-profile players have returned from them. Gurley may have actually been ready last week, and the Rams held him out as a precaution. If so, that means he should be all systems go, and ready to tear through defenses.

Top Bargains On Draft Kings For Week 3

Well, NFL teams are more careful these days and it’s entirely possible Gurley could be on a “pitch count” of sorts. In daily fantasy leagues such as FanDuel and Draft Kings, lay off him in Week 3. In your seasonal leagues, hold off on playing him if you have options. If you are thin at RB, play him; the matchup is tasty, but you may be hoping for a long-distance score.

Tre Mason

Mason had a chance last week to make a statement about being pushed aside for Gurley, and he fell short. He carried the ball seven times for 26 yards and left coach Jeff Fisher little reason to give a full workload to Gurley upon his return.

Mason is a complete stay-away in daily leagues; even though he is talented, the best you can hope for is an even split of carries with Gurley, while he cedes third down situations to Benny Cunningham. In seasonal leagues, he is similar to Gurley, with less upside. Deep league owners might have to play him if they’re thin at RB, or dealing with an injury. If so, there’s not too much upside, but some potential for a touchdown.

Benny Cunningham

Cunningham is impossible to play in daily leagues, and droppable in all but the deepest seasonal leagues. For now, he is St. Louis’ passing-downs back, but for Gurley to justify a top-10 pick, he must be a three-down back. Cunningham will lose this role very quickly.
