Mason Darrow made history at Princeton University, becoming the the school's first openly gay football player.

The junior came out to teammate Caleb Slate at the start of the 2013 season -- his story would eventually be published by Outsports.com. It wasn't as eventful as one might think. After a brief chat, the two ate mozzarella sticks and played video games.

Mozzarella sticks.

Slate's reaction falls in line with the narrative surrounding openly gay players in the sports world. It's just not a big deal anymore.

"People will surprise you," Darrow said, per Fox Sports. "I was definitely concerned that people, teammates, would react poorly. I think in this day and age people really just don't care about it. It's really not a big deal anymore.

"I want to show people you can be gay and play Division I football. If that's going to help some sophomore in Arizona come out to his teammates and be comfortable in himself, that's the reason I'm doing it."

Except Michael Sam already showed us that you can.

Admittedly, Sam didn't come out publicly until after he graduated from the collegiate game, but he did inform his coaches and teammates prior to the 2013 season. It didn't stop him from being named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year.

In fact, the real surprise here isn't Darrow's decision to become Princeton's first openly gay player, it's that Princeton still has a football program in the first place.

The Tigers are 19-21 since 2011 and haven't won a national championship since 1950.
