For the third time this season, New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter is set to return from the disabled list.
Jeter is batting second in the lineup and playing at shortstop against the Toronto Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre Monday night.
Jeter has endured a frustrating season. His latest set-back saw him stay off the diamond since Aug. 2 due to a strained right calf. The Yankees captain, 39, didn't make his season debut until July 11 because he suffered a broken ankle in last year's American League Championship Series, which the Yankees lost to the Detroit Tigers in four games.
Jeter has appeared in just five games this season, and is hitting .211 (4-for-19) with one homer and two RBIs. Monday's game marks the first time that Jeter and embattled teammate and third baseman Alex Rodriguez are both in the Yankee lineup in the same game since Game 1 of the ALCS, when Jeter broke his ankle fielding a ground ball.
Last season, Jeter hit .316, had 15 long-balls and 58 RBIs.
The Yankees could use Jeter back as the Bronx Bombers are currently trying to make a push for the playoffs. The Yankees (69-61) are seven games behind the first place Boston Red Sox for the American League East lead, but are also just 3.5 games out of the second wildcard spot currently held by the Oakland Athletics.
The Yankees also have the division-rival Baltimore Orioles and the Cleveland Indians in front of them in wildcard positioning.
While the playoffs aren't guaranteed for the Yankees, the team will at least hope to get a lift when the captain returns Monday.
