What They're Saying
Texas head coach Charlie Strong on facing Malik Zaire (via 247Sports): "Well you look at Zaire, a big, physical runner and he's a guy that can beat you with his feet. And then you watch him when he releases the ball, the deep throw is amazing where he gets the ball and he hangs it out there and he can throw it a long ways. He's a runner that can beat you with his speed and he can throw the ball very well."
Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly on sharing the playcalling responsibilities with offensive coordinator Mike Sanford (via NBC Sports): "We are going to collaborate. There will be collaboration. Mike Sanford, myself, Coach Denbrock, there will be collaboration on Saturday."
Performance To Examine
Make no mistake, Notre Dame is Zaire's team to lead. The junior waited for an opportunity to feature at QB. It came in last year's regular-season finale at USC. Replacing an ineffective Everett Golson, Zaire threw for 170 yards and ran for an additional 18.
The following month—against LSU in the Music City Bowl—the 20-year-old showed his potential. His arm finished 12-of-15 for 96 yards and one TD. His feet ran for 96 more.
Malik Zaire is 1st left-handed QB for #NotreDame since Art Parisien helped beat USC, 13-12, in first game between schools in 1926.
