The Cowboys' running back situation is becoming a bit clearer with the NFL season about a week from getting underway, and the clarity isn't great for Joseph Randle or Darren McFadden in a fantasy football sense.

Randle should get the better end of a time share with Darren McFadden, but his workload will be somewhere between 10-15 carries, with McFadden checking in at a little below that, according to The Fort Worth Star-Telegram. The split is a far cry from the work DeMarco Murray received in 2014; Murray toted the rock 392 times and amassed 1,845 yards, both NFL-highs.

McFadden told the Star-Telegram the starting nomination means little. "The competitor in me is going to say I want to be the starting running back. At the end of the day, we're both going to get carries however they decide to play it out," McFadden said.

Randle seems a little less pleased with the arrangement. He said "no doubt," the starting nod is important.

"I'm just going to go in there and be as productive as a I can and take full advantage of the opportunity that I get," Randle said. "And let the rest fall where it may."

Another factor limiting both Randle's and McFadden's value is the presence of Lance Dunbar, a third-stringer by definition, but a player the Cowboys will use in third-down and passing situations.

Both Dunbar and Randle are pretty speculative plays for fantasy owners despite their cushy situation behind Dallas' road graders on the offensive line. Dunbar only registered 29 carries for 99 yards in 2014, while Randle rushed 51 times. McFadden, one of the most injury-prone players in the NFL, had the most carries of this group in 2014 with 155.

All three backs have question marks, making them all murky options for your fantasy team. At this point, owners can safely ignore Dunbar on draft day. Randle is going far ahead of McFadden, which is silly with these reports coming out. Owners interested in Randle need to invest in both Randle and McFadden, and make sure Dunbar is in the back of their mind if one gets hurt.
