There seems to be some confusion as to whether the light show for James Harden's 26th birthday party was legal.

Marina del Rey, Calif., residents are suing Khloe Kardashian and Kris Jenner for the extravagant fireworks display they put on at midnight on Wednesday last week to honor Harden, the Rockets star and Kardashian's boyfriend, TMZ Sports is reporting.

A group of 12 homeowners, including several celebrities, is going to small claims court for "terrorizing an untold number of residents, who thought their city was under attack," according to TMZ Sports.

Kardashian, however, told Entertainment Tonight last week that she got all the required permits for the fireworks display.

"I got all the permits," she told ET. "Someone couldn't release those fireworks if you didn't get [one]. The company's licenses would've been revoked, so of course I got everything I had to do to do so. No one would just take that risk."

TMZ, however, reported last week that Kardashian didn't need a permit to set off the fireworks; she simply needed permission from the Coast Guard for the safety of the display and received that.

Each resident is asking for $7,500 -- the maximum allowed in California small claims court -- for emotional distress. One homeowner is claiming her child "freaked out," while another says the display worsened her multiple sclerosis condition, TMZ reports.

The suing parties told TMZ the money is not the issue. They simply want to confront Kardashian, Jenner and the rest of the family over what they allege is rude and selfish behavior.

The small claims court does not allow lawyers, meaning that it appears Kardashian and Jenner would have to appear in court, TMZ added.
