Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s superfight with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez is drawing closer and closer, and boxing legends as well as active fighters are weighing in.
Recently, long-retired welterweight Roberto Duran, who defeated Sugar Ray Leonard said Mayweather would be "just another guy" in his day, while Brandon Rios said in front of Manny Pacquiao that in their primes, Floyd was the better fighter.
The most recent voice to pop up has been that of Oscar De La Hoya, who has predicted an Alvarez victory. De La Hoya is quoted by Yahoo! Sports saying "a new rooster will emerge" while on Alvarez's plane. De La Hoya lost a hard-fought decision to Mayweather in 2007 that sparked the flame for "Money" May's current status.
Mayweather predictably disagreed with De La Hoya's veiled prediction, directing some pointed words at De La Hoya and Alvarez. "Canelo is such a big star, but he's never been on pay-per-view unless he's on my undercard. But he's such a big star. He's such a big star, Oscar. I'm young. I'm fly. I'm flashy. I'm rich," Mayweather said.
De La Hoya also has a long history of predicting Mayweather losses, incorrectly choosing Ricky Hatton, Juan Manuel Marquez, Shane Mosley, Victor Ortiz, Miguel Cotto, and Robert Guerrero would all be the first person to humble "Money."
De La Hoya, who is in the crowd as Mayweather is boasting then says, "I respect that he's beaten everybody and he still has that oh on his record. But one thing that Mayweather has to understand is that my fighter is going to kick your a-s."
Meanwhile, there hasn't been much talk the past few days of a possible reigniting of the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao hype train, despite the best efforts of Pacquiao's camp. Pacman's trainer Freddie Roach has said if Pacquiao can score an entertaining knockout win over Brandon Rios, he should be next in line for Mayweather's pound-for-pound crown.
