It looks like Redskins coach Jay Gruden has had enough of Robert Griffin III, and regardless of his health, Washington will have a different quarterback at the helm.
Griffin suffered a concussion in the Redskins’ Week 2 preseason game vs. the Lions, and has yet to be cleared to play. He wasn’t playing particularly well this preseason, and reports had leaked that Gruden planned on naming Kirk Cousins the starter for Week 1. Other reports are claiming that Gruden wants to trade Griffin, but that owner Dan Snyder is preventing it.
Those rumors are “100 percent wrong,” a source familiar with the situation told The Washington Post. “It’s up to the coach and everyone is on board with that,” the source said.
Griffin will reportedly be difficult to trade anyway since he has a 2016 option in his contract that could kick in for $16 million. It doesn’t help that Griffin has missed 12 games over the past two seasons with leg injuries, and has been picked off 18 times in 20 starts over that span. Still, these three teams make perfect sense as possible destinations for RGIII.
Bills' Tyrod Taylor Makes Strong Case To Be The Starter
Buffalo Bills
It’s late in the game for a trade, and Tyrod Taylor has played well in the preseason, but if head coach Rex Ryan and quarterback coach David Lee are truly into having speed at the QB position, there isn’t a better option than Griffin.
His rushing numbers have dropped since his rookie year, largely because of injury, but he offers the same things Taylor does, with the difference being Griffin has NFL starting experience and has brought a team to the playoffs.
Griffin wouldn’t have to start right away, but he may just need a change of scenery from his toxic environment in Washington to recapture his rookie glow.
New York Jets
The Jets’ roster is pretty solid, but QB is a question mark. Geno Smith is out with a broken jaw and Ryan Fitzpatrick is about as middle-of-the-road as a replacement option get. Griffin could bomb, but he could also be spectacular. He is also a dynamite playmaker, which the Jets sorely lack. Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker are quality players, but project to only be high-end possession receivers. Chris Ivory is a bruiser, but not a real game breaker. Griffin adds a home run threat.
St. Louis Rams
At this point Griffin may just be a backup-caliber player. Wouldn’t it be ironic if the Rams, the team who benefitted from a slew of high picks in 2012 when Washington sold the farm for RGIII, wound up acquiring him anyway?
They traded for Nick Foles this offseason to be their starter, but there are questions about whether Foles’ magical 2013 run in Philadelphia (27 TDs, two INTs) was a mirage created by Chip Kelly’s offense. During an injury-shortened 2014 Foles showed some cracks in his game, and now he’s left Kelly’s QB-friendly system for a Rams team with underwhelming pass catchers. Griffin would be an intriguing player for St. Louis, not only to give Foles some competition, but to be a fearsome rushing tandem with rookie RB Todd Gurley.
