Markus Burden's transition from high school to college isn't like most freshmen-it comes with free tuition.
According to reports, Burden, a freshman at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, sunk a half-court shot on Thursday in his first day of college that won him a full-semester's worth of free tuition. The video of the shot has gone viral ever since it was posted on YouTube on August 16 and has nearly 300,000 views as of Monday evening.
The shot can be seen here:
Burden, 18, was attending a freshman's Welcome Week event when he had the opportunity to try and sink the nearly-impossible shot. The value of the shot is reportedly worth around $11,084 according to ABC, the price of a semester at the school.
Burden was ecstatic upon hitting the shot.
"I called my mother right after when I won," Burden said per ABC. "When we were walking outside I was basically in tears telling her that her son just won us free tuition."
Burden's mother, Malinda Burden, couldn't have been happier to see her son save some money on his college tuition.
"God is good," she wrote Friday on her Facebook page, while posting a link to the video of her son's amazing shot.
According to the Indianapolis Star, Burden said he had already missed the shot three times and that it was an "overwhelming feeling" when he saw the money-saving ball go through the net and insure the Chicago native of free tuition.
The video shows Burden sending the gymnasium into a frenzy. After he hit the shot he pumped his fist and ran around the court in excitement while his fellow freshman, Ball State cheerleaders and the University's mascot Charlie Cardinal went crazy.
ABC reports that it was the first time in history that a student cashed in on the University's gamble of offering tuition in exchange for the shot.
