Floyd Mayweather Jr. has taken heaps of criticism for choosing Andre Berto, loser of three of his last six fights, to be his opponent on September 12 in what is being billed as Mayweather's last fight. At least one person does not think September 12 is the end of the line for Mayweather though -- Gennady Golovkin's trainer Abel Sanchez.
Golovkin, an undefeated middleweight champion with 20 straight knockouts and 30 overall, has stated his desire to fight Mayweather before "Money" leaves the sport. Golovkin has even offered to drop weight to 154 pounds, where Mayweather is a champion, to make it happen. So far he's been unable to sway the pound-for-pound champ to accept the challenge.
"I think that Mayweather is too much of a historian, and too much of a businessman, to think that all he wants to do is finish out and hold the record," Sanchez said, according to boxingscene.com. "I think that he's going to look for challenges beyond that, and if we're in the mix, Golovkin has professed that as his dream fight for his career.
"If it happens, I can promise you this, it won't be a May 2 fight. Golovkin will stop him."
Abel Sanchez says Miguel Cotto is "running" from Golovkin
Mayweather commented recently on Golovkin, calling him an "okay" fighter and seeming unaware that Golovkin would concede weight to make the fight happen.
"I don't really know the guy...Gennady. I just know him as Triple G. He's okay," Mayweather said. "I can't make 160 but I've seen him fight. He's straight up and down, no special effects. I wish him nothing but the best and congratulations with everything he's done in his career."
What Golovkin's done is run through every fighter put in front of him, but fail to capture the name opponent that can catapult him into stardom. His upcoming fight vs. David Lemieux, a title unification fight, is a step in the right direction. The bout will be Golovkin's first as a pay-per-view headliner, and it may be enough to get Mayweather to consider him as a 50th opponent, should he continue his career.
