Floyd Mayweather Jr. had some less than flattering comments about WBA and IBO middleweight champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin, an undefeated 160-pounder with 20 straight knockouts. Golovkin offered to drop to 154 pounds, where Mayweather is a champion, but Mayweather chose to fight Andre Berto on September 12 instead.

"I don't really know the guy...Gennady. I just know him as Triple G. He's okay," Mayweather said. "I can't make 160 but I've seen him fight. He's straight up and down, no special effects. I wish him nothing but the best and congratulations with everything he's done in his career."

Golovkin trainer says Miguel Cotto "is running" from GGG

Golovkin has egged on superstars like Mayweather and Miguel Cotto to fight him so he can prove he belongs in the elite class of fighters. Golovkin is wildly popular among fans for his "Mexican style," and his knockouts, but a common refrain from his detractors is a lack of quality opposition. Golovkin is stepping up in class for his next fight, a unification bout vs. David Lemieux, but big-name opponents have largely avoided fighting him.

Mayweather's claim that he can't fight at 160 pounds is reasonable, except for the fact that Golovkin insisted he would move down to make the fight happen. Mayweather has been under fire recently for avoiding a slew of other fighters in his own weight class, such as Amir Khan, Keith Thurman, and Shawn Porter.

Berto says "Of course" he can knock Mayweather out

Khan has boasted that he has the size, skills and hand speed to defeat Mayweather. Thurman is an undefeated power puncher with a knack for ring generalship, and Porter most recently defeated Adrien Broner, which was enough to land Marcos Maidana not one, but two cracks at Mayweather.

Berto is far less qualified at this point in time than any of those fighters. Berto is 3-3 in his last six fights, and has last to Victor Ortiz and Robert Guerrero, two fighters Mayweather defeated soundly four and two years ago, respectively.
