Perhaps all the noise coming out of Manny Pacquiao's camp attempting to restart talks and clamor for a bout between Pacman and Floyd Mayweather Jr. is becoming a distraction to "Money" as he prepares for Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.
Mayweather has changed his tune a bit regarding the man once considered his pound-for-pound equal. After saying in the past Pacquiao would have to join Mayweather Promotions to make a fight happen, Floyd is now telling boxing fans to give up on the concept altogether.
"He's not going to get a chance to fight me," Mayweather said to MLive.com. "Now, I'm feeling like I wouldn't even give him a chance. He had a chance, he blew it, so that's what it is."
Recently during an interview Pacquiao took exception to Floyd's calling him a has-been. Pacman said, "Let's get it on. Fight in the ring. I mean, whatever you can say. 'My boxing career is done.' Then fight. Try. That's good for you because you can easily beat me in the ring."
Mayweather has the biggest fight of his career looming on September 14th against Alvarez, a 23-year-old Mexican superstar who enters the fight with a 42-0-1 record that includes 30 knockouts. The normally brash Mayweather typically mocks and berates his opponents in the buildup to his fights, but he has been respectful of Alvarez throughout the process.
Floyd has of course predicted victory with extreme confidence, but has also referred to Alvarez frequently as a "young, strong champion." The last fighter to receive this level of professionalism from Mayweather was Miguel Cotto. Cotto provided Mayweather with one of the toughest fights of his career, managing to bloody "Pretty Boy" Floyd's face, but ultimately lost a clear, unanimous decision.
Meanwhile, Pacquiao is set to face Brandon Rios in Macau, China on November 24th. Pacquiao is hoping to deliver a scintillating knockout of Rios to establish excitement and buzz. Pacman and trainer Freddie Roach believe an impressive KO could deliver them the fight with Mayweather that they crave.
