What's good for the Spurs is good for the Cardinals.

A month after the San Antonio Spurs made Becky Hammon coach of their NBA summer league team, a league she coached to the summer league title, the Arizona Cardinals have hired Jen Welter as a coaching intern during training camp and the preseason, coach Bruce Arians announced on the team's website.

Summer league gig grooming Spurs' assistant Becky Hammon to become head coach?

Multiple media outlets are reporting that Welter is the first female assistant coach in NFL history.

"Coaching is nothing more than teaching," Arians said Monday, via the team's official website. "One thing I have learned from players is, 'How are you going to make me better? If you can make me better, I don't care if you're the Green Hornet, man, I'll listen.' I really believe she'll have a great opportunity with this internship through training camp to open some doors for her."

Welter already has a barrier-breaking resume.

"During a 14-year career as a professional football player, Welter isn't new to breaking barriers," Forbes.com reported. "Back in 2014, she became the first non-kicker to play in a men's professional football game as a running back for the Texas Revolution of the Indoor Football League."

Forbes added that Welter has a master's degree in sports psychology and a PhD in psychology. SI.com reported that she competed on a pair of United States national women's football teams and won two gold medals at the world championships.

Earlier this year, the NFL hired Sarah Thomas as its first full-time on-field official.

Spurs coach Gregg Povovich hired Hammon before the start of the 2014-15 season as an assistant coach.
