John Cena Injury: WWE Superstar Elbow Requires Surgery After SummerSlam; Daniel Bryan Favorite To Win WWE Championship?

Reports have indicated that WWE Champion John Cena's left elbow injury is "worse than is being let on."

F4W online reported Monday that WWE officials have decided to keep Cena out of the ring until his SummerSlam match with Daniel Bryan for the WWE title due to the severity of his injury. Additionally, Cena may require surgery on his injured arm following Sunday's SummerSlam pay-per-view because of how bad the ailment is.

Cena tweeted the following about his injury last week:

Cena didn't wrestle on Monday Night RAW last night, but rather was involved in the interview segment "MizTV" with Bryan, where the two traded verbal jabs.

If Cena is going to have surgery after SummerSlam and is expected to miss time, speculation has now grown over who will walk out of SummerSlam with the WWE championship. Bryan could very well go over Cena at the event, but Randy Orton is still lurking with his Money in the Bank briefcase and could conceivably leave the Staples Center with the gold.

Wrestle Zone reported that Cena was pulled out of a house show in Oakland, Calif. at the last minute despite being advertised to appear at the event. It would seem that WWE officials were uncomfortable with letting Cena wrestle a non-televised event close to SummerSlam with a risk of further injury.

Cena, despite being a controversial figure, is WWE's No. 1 talent and the face of the company, so missing significant time could hurt the brand even though Superstars like Bryan, Orton and even CM Punk are extremely over with the crowd.

Cena, an 11-time WWE Champion, facing Bryan with Triple H as the guest referee is one of the main events of Sunday's SummerSlam, and it'll be interesting to see whether or not the injury hinders the match at all. The two other heavily promoted matches on the card are Punk vs. Brock Lesnar in a match dubbed as "The Best vs. The Beast" and Christian challenging Alberto Del Rio for his World heavyweight championship.

The full card is as follows:

- John Cena vs. Daniel Bryan (WWE championship, Triple H as guest ref.)
- CM Punk vs. Brock Lesnar
- Alberto Del Rio vs. Christian (World heavyweight championship)
- Natalya vs. Brie Bella
- Bray Wyatt vs. Kane (Ring of Fire)
- Cody Rhodes vs. Damien Sandow
-Dolph Ziggler & Kaitlyn vs. Big E. Langston & AJ Lee (Mixed tag)
-Dean Ambrose vs. Rob Van Dam (United States title, SummerSlam kick-off preshow)
