The WWE had planned on giving Sheamus the Money in the Bank briefcase for over a year and now that he has it in his possession, he's likely to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship following SummerSlam in August.

WWE Monday Night RAW Rumors and Preview: The Beast Is Back

According to Wrestlingheadlines.com, the WWE wanted to have Sheamus win the briefcase last year, but it was forced to change its plans following a series of events.

The WWE wanted The Celtic Warrior to turn heel and face Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania XXX in New Orleans last year and then use that win to propel himself to becoming Mr. Money in the Bank later in 2014.

After CM Punk left the WWE, the company changed its plans and Bryan eventually won the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at the Show of Shows instead of taking on Sheamus.

Following Bryan's neck injury, the WWE had to put the vacant title on the line in the Money in the Bank Ladder Match and decided to give it to John Cena.

The decision was made because Cena was the best possible person to feud with and drop the belt to Brock Lesnar, which he did at SummerSlam last year in Los Angeles.

When the company revealed that there would be a second Ladder Match for the contract at last year's event, Sheamus had already been announced for the title bout and the company didn't want to switch its plans.

As a result, the WWE's push for Sheamus was put on hold and the company waited until this year's event to award The Celtic Warrior with the briefcase for the first time.

According to the report, it is expected that the WWE's Irish Superstar will win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship sometime within the next year, likely after SummerSlam, which emanates from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Aug. 23.

The Celtic Warrior is likely to take the gold from whichever babyface takes it from Seth Rollins, unless the reports are true about The Architect turning face for a feud with Triple H at SummerSlam.

It remains to be seen how the booking will go, but the WWE is big on Sheamus and this huge push for The Celtic Warrior was a year in the making.
