Chicago Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw triumphantly hoisting the Stanley Cup above his head while blood bellowed from his stitched-up face is one of the more iconic images that came out of the Blackhawks' Game 6 victory over the Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup Finals last June.
Now, Shaw is giving fans a chance to own a piece of that image for themselves.
According to Shaw's Facebook, the center is auctioning off each individual stitch that held the cuts on his face together after he took a puck to his face in Game 6 during Chicago's march to the Cup.
From Shaw's official Facebook page:
"Starting Thursday August 15th, 2013 we will be auctioning off the actual stitches that Andrew Shaw received from a puck he took to the face in Game Six of the Stanley Cup Finals. This auction will be run for ten days ending on August 25th, 2013 on eBay.com."
A photo of the stitches can be seen here.
The Facebook update also says that the links to each stitch being auctioned will be posted on the social media site as well. It also notes that the stitches are being professionally framed with an autographed photo of Shaw and that there will be other items included in the auction lot.
Reports indicate that the proceeds from the winning bid are to be donated to the V Foundation for Cancer Research.
Shaw was hit in the face by the puck off of a shot from Shawn Thornton in the first period of the June 24 game.
Shaw, 22, was drafted by the Blackhawks 139th overall in the fifth round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. In the 48-game lockout-shortened NHL season in 2013, Shaw put up nine goals and six assists for a total of 15 points, while also registering two game-winning goals. Shaw helped the Blackhawks to the President's Trophy, awarded to the team with the best overall record and most points in the NHL each season, as Chicago finished with a 36-7-5 overall record and 77 points.
Shaw played in 23 playoff games, and had nine points (five goals, four assists) as Chicago won its second Stanley Cup since 2010. Shaw's fifth playoff goal gave the Blackhawks a Game 1 victory over the Bruins in triple overtime.
