Dixie Carter and TNA have reportedly made a big play for former WWE World Heavyweight Champion Rey Mysterio.

According to Wrestlingheadlines.com, Carter and John Gaburick recently spoke to Mysterio and tried to convince him to sign with the company.

The push reportedly included trying to sell Mysterio on the idea that they can get his merchandise into stores and that TNA could be his window to television and movie roles.

TNA has wanted to build up a Mexican Superstar in the past, and the belief is that Mysterio would more than fit the bill for Carter's company.

Part of the deal also included Mysterio, who was expected to sign with Lucha Underground sometime soon, being given the ability to work anywhere he wants in his off days.

Carter and TNA have gone after big former WWE stars in the past, including WWE Hall of Famer Edge, former WWE Champion Alberto "El Patron" Del Rio and the departed former WWE Champion CM Punk, who signed with UFC last December.

Mysterio, 40, and the WWE mutually parted ways in February following months of back-and-forth between the two sides where Mysterio wanted out of his deal and Vince McMahon wanted to keep him under contract.

Mysterio ended his WWE tenure as a three-time WWE World Heavyweight Champion and Cruiserweight Champion, two-time Intercontinental Champion and four-time Tag Team Champion. He was also a big part of WCW's Cruiserweight division before the company went under in 2001.

Most recently, Mysterio was involved in an unfortunate incident which resulted in the accidental death of Perro Aguayo Jr. during a tag team match pitting the two on opposite teams of each other in March.

If Mysterio were to join TNA, he'd be doing it during some troubled times for Carter and her organization as there have been reports of low backstage morale, wrestlers and crew members getting paid late and there has also been speculation that Destination America could drop Impact Wrestling, especially now that it picked up Ring of Honor.

It remains to be seen how this plays out, but TNA is making an attempt at landing Mysterio.
