The San Jose Sharks and center Joe Pavelski have agreed to a five-year $30 million contract extension that keeps the Sharks 2003 seventh-round draft pick in San Jose.
San Jose is rewarding Pavelski after a season in which he was third on the team with 31 points (16 goals, 15 assists) in 48 games. Pavelski had 12 points in the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs with four goals and eight assists before the Sharks were eliminated in the second round by their division rival Los Angeles Kings.
Pavelski, a native of Plover, Wis.,was clutch for San Jose during the 48-game lockout-shortened season last year, scoring five game-winning goals--good enough for sixth place in the NHL in that category.
Pavelski's confidence in the team's chances to win it all is what drove him to sign the extension, according to his agent Daniel Plante.
"One of the things as we were going through these discussions, I asked Joe, 'Do you believe this team can win a Stanley Cup?' And without missing a beat, he emphatically said, 'Yes,"' Plante said according to CBS Sports.
Pavelski, 29, was the 205th overall pick in the draft for San Jose in 2003. He stands at five-foot-11 and weighs in at 190-pounds. He helped Team USA to the silver medal in the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver.
In 479 career NHL games, all with San Jose, Pavelski has 150 goals and 186 assists for a total of 336 points.
Pavelski helped the Sharks to a 25-16-7 record and 59 points last season, good enough for the sixth seed in the Western Conference.
