The riots in Baltimore are not a pretty sight for anyone. Thousands of dollars of property damage have been done, and many people have been injured. It has been captivating television, to say the least, but it has also affected the city in ways beyond what you hear about on the news.
Melo Weighs In On Baltimore Riots
In less important circles, it has also affected Major League Baseball, as the Baltimore Orioles and Chicago White Sox played in front of an empty stadium yesterday after fans were barred from the game due to safety concerns. "After conversations with the Orioles and local officials, we believe that these decisions are in the best interests of fan safety and the deployment of city resources," MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said of the decision.
"It makes you realize how unimportant really in a lot of ways this is compared to some things that are going on," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "You try to keep that mind and look at things realistically, where this fits in the scheme of things. You prioritize what's important and we tried to do that."

Showalter also showed a bit of a lighter side about the empty stadium, however, when he asked, "Does the mascot work today?"
As it turned out, the mascot did not work. And why shouldn't he have the day off? Mascots are there to entertain fans and brighten the mood of the public. In an empty stadium with nobody to entertain, what is the mascot to do?
The Orioles won the game 8-2. Hopefully the situation will be sorted out in time for fans to attend this weekend's homestand against the Tampa Bay Rays.
