Looks like Florida Gators head coach Billy Donovan is ready to sink his teeth into the NBA.

Kevin Durant Unsure About His 2016 Plans

Reports emerged on Wednesday afternoon that the Oklahoma City Thunder were ready to extend a formal offer to Donovan to take over the helm from departed coach Scott Brooks. Brooks took the Thunder to five straight playoff seasons, but finished 9th in the West this year after injuries to Kevin Durant and Serge Ibaka derailed their postseason bid.

Donovan has had great success at the University of Florida since taking over the program in 1996, including winning the school two national championships in 2006 and 2007. However, the history of NCAA coaches who experience success on the college level only to flounder once they get to the pros is pretty long.

Rick Pitino struggled with the Celtics. Tim Floyd couldn't hack it in Chicago. Mike Montgomery had no answers for Golden State. Lon Kruger failed to take the Hawks to the postseason. And Mike Dunlap couldn't hack it in Charlotte for more than a season. Butler coach Brad Stevens stands as the lone exception to the rule in recent years, having just taken Boston to the postseason despite a depleted roster.

Moreover, Donovan will have a second tough task in addition to just winning games. He'll need to somehow convince Durant to re-up with the Thunder in 2016, rather than take his talents elsewhere in free agency.
