Domestic violence continues to be a plague that's far too embedded in the culture of NFL and NCAA football.
Just a few days after Alabama Crimson Tide defensive tackle Jonathan Taylor was kicked out of that program for an alleged violent altercation with his girlfriend, another SEC player may be facing the same fate.
News came Thursday that Florida Gators wide receiver Chris Thompson was brought up on charges from local police, for misdemeanor simple battery/dating violence, according to the Gainesville Sun.
Apparently Thompson had been cheating on his current girlfriend, and the young woman discovered news of his infidelity via sexts on his cell phone. Thompson aggressively tried to retrieve his phone from her, leaving the woman with bruises and lacerations on her body.
Gators head coach Jim McElwain said that Thompson would be away from the team while he dealt with this legal issue.
“Chris, obviously, had an incident here sometime last week,” McElwain said. “He's dealing with that. He's been excused from what we're doing right now until it's resolved. That's kind of how we deal with it. We'll find out as it goes forward, find out what goes on.
“He's excused from the team, and been dealing with the matter.”
Thompson had two catches for 17 yards in his freshman season in 2014.
