While the arrest and release of former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez dominates the NFL conversation, Cleveland Browns linebacker Ausar Walcott was arrested today on charges of attempted murder, according to reports.
The six feet, three inch, 227-lb. Walcott allegedly punched a man, Derrick Jones, outside a The Palace Gentleman's Club in northern New Jersey. Walcott's un-gentlemanly actions have left Jones in critical condition in the hospital with serious head injuries. In addition to the first-degree attempted murder charge, Walcott is also facing second-degree aggravated assault, and third-degree endangering an injured victim.
The Browns have said in a statement that they are "aware of the situation" involving the 23-year-old Walcott. The linebacker is being held on $500,000 bail. He was signed this offseason as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Virginia. In the statement the Browns also said "This is a pending legal matter and we will not comment."
A defensive end and linebacker hybrid who began his freshman year at Virginia as a defensive back, Walcott amassed 128 career tackles with the Cavaliers, including six tackles for loss. He also had 2.5 sacks in his four-year career, but wasn't a tremendous playmaker, recording zero interceptions or fumble recoveries.
He registered a 40-yard dash time of 4.63, and according to NFLDraftscout.com was ranked No. 74 out of 199 eligible outside linebackers in the 2013 draft. Gordon Whiting, Walcott's high school coach in New Jersey, said of his former player, "He is a great kid, a hard-working kid," Whiting said. "He was never a discipline problem." He added that he was "shocked" to hear of his legal problems.
