Bill Parcells Regrets The Way He Left New England Patriots

As a Pro Football Hall of Fame Inductee, Bill Parcells doesn’t have many regrets about the way his storied career has gone.

But Parcells tells ESPN he is remorseful about the way he severed ties with the New England Patriots and admits “I absolutely was too headstrong.”

During his tenure, Parcells often clashed with owner Robert Kraft, but seemingly had the team on the right course after a three-year stretch beginning in 1993 when they were viewed as one of the league’s worse franchises.

By 1997, the Patriots had earned a Super Bowl berth. That’s also when word leaked out that Parcells was being courted by the New York Jets.  Following yet another blow-up with Kraft, Parcells officially left for the Jets during the off season.

But now, Parcells seems to insinuate that if he could change it all, maybe he would.  "I had a good, young team there,” he told ESPN. “I hated to leave that team because I knew what we could do. I think both Kraft and myself, retrospectively, would have done things a little differently," Parcells said.

Kraft also regrets how things ended with Parcells, recalling a conversation he had about a decade ago in which they made peace. "At a Super Bowl, Bill was standing there as I approached, and he just said to me, 'If I had to do it all over again, I would have done things differently.' And I said, 'So would I,'" he told ESPN.

Parcells will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Aug. 3.
