One of the major running storylines of the offseason was which team would eventually sign Yoan Moncada, the 19-year old Cuban infielder that could develop into a potential star one day, as he has all the makings of a five-tool player.

In the end, Moncada signed with the Boston Red Sox, although at least 10 other teams were interested in him, according to Bleacher Report. The move is a huge victory for a Red Sox team that is overflowing with young talent, and it is an equally damaging blow to their divisional rivals, the New York Yankees. The Yankees believed they were on the verge of landing Moncada, so it must be even more painful for them to miss by the slimmest of margins.

Still, the signing represents the diverging paths of the two franchises. The Red Sox have one of the best farm systems in the league, and many of their key position players are youngsters that could turn into stars. The Yankees, meanwhile, have an aging roster and appear to have little help on the way in terms of young talent.

The failure is just the latest for New York after they also proved unable to lure any big-name free agents this offseason (a franchise first), and the team appears headed for another subpar season.

Though the Yankees surely do not want to acknowledge it, their rivals to the north are clearly the better franchise right now, both in terms of how well the organization is run and how they are positioned to compete for the next several years.

While it may be hard to overpay for the rights to a player like Moncada, some are saying that Boston did. See the video below for more.
