When all is said and done, Maria Sharapova could very well be considered one of the greatest female tennis players in the sport's history. But when it comes to her on-court relationship with rival Serena Williams, Sharapova is really nothing but a second banana.

Williams dominated Sharapova in last month's Australian Open, to win her 19th career major. The loss pushed Sharapova's losing streak against the American to 11 years. The last time she defeated Williams was in 2004, when she won her first major at Wimbledon.

In fact, Sharapova is so cognizant of her long-time struggles against Serena, she ranked beating Williams head-to-head as a bigger goal in 2015 than reclaiming the No. 1 world ranking.

"I wouldn't say it's as much of a priority as when I was younger," Sharapova said in an interview with Reuters, referring to recapturing that top ranking.

"[Serena] is definitely an opponent that I have had a lot of trouble playing against in the last 10 years and someone that I would love to beat," she added.

"I love facing her and I love that challenge. I'm definitely not shy of competing against her."

Sharapova can next be seen on the court in this month's Mexico Open.
