Patrick Ewing: KKK Rally Scared Him From Attending North Carolina With Michael Jordan

Patrick Ewing says he was close to joining Michael Jordan at North Carolina but on the weekend he traveled there for his visit the KKK was having a rally right outside the place where he was staying.

“I was close,” Ewing told host Dan Patrick on his morning show. “North Carolina was a very good school, but you know, when I went down there they put me in that Carolina Inn and there was a big rally. I was like, you know, I’m not coming down here. I’m staying my butt back in Boston.”

Carolina’s loss proved to be Georgetown and Coach John Thompson’s gain as Ewing led the Hoyas to a national title. As for his pairing with Jordan, that too has finally come to be, as the former Knick and Hall Fame center was named associate head coach of Jordan’s Charlotte Bobcats earlier this week.

Jordan and Ewing have long been close since their days of starring on the 1992 Dream Team together and co-starring in the animated cult film “Space Jam.”

Still, Ewing admitted to Patrick not all their memories are fund ones, reflecting on all the trash talk Jordan use to hit him with when they were Eastern Conference rivals with the Knicks and Chicago Bulls respectively.

Jordan went on to win six NBA titles, while Ewing and the Knicks never quite got over the hump.
