A glum and dejected LeBron James reflected the sudden disarray the defending champion Miami Heat now find themselves in after Tuesday’s Game 3 NBA Finals blowout loss to the San Antonio Spurs.
“We didn’t do anything right tonight,” James told USA Today. “We can’t play like that on either side of the floor if we want to win.” All those observations are valid, yet in the very next breath, the league’s reigning MVP was offering a totally different view. “I’ve got to be better,” James told the paper. “I’m putting everything on my chest and on my shoulders. I’ve got to be better. It’s that simple. My teammates are doing a great job, and I’m not doing my part.”
For much of Tuesday’s 113-77, James and the entire Miami Heat team looked outclassed and undermanned against the red-hot Spurs. Even with Tony Parker playing just 27-minutes San Antonio was never really seriously challenged. James finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds, though many of his baskets came during a garbage-time fourth quarter and long after San Antonio was securely in the midst of a 69-33 game-ending run.
San Antonio now leads the series 2-1, while the Heat are left to soul search between now and Game 4 Thursday. "I didn't recognize our team tonight," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra told USA Today said. "We got what we deserved out there."
