The best offensive weapon in the NBA may be a certain guard residing in Northern California with the Golden State Warriors.

But it's not the one that you think.

Warriors consultant Jerry West a genius for not pulling Kevin Love-for-Klay Thompson trade?

CBSSports.com reported on Klay Thompson's record-setting 37-point quarter during the Warriors' 126-101 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Friday night. He beat the previous record of 33, held by George Gervin and Carmelo Anthony.

Once upon a time, both Gervin and Anthony arguably were among the greatest scorers in their generation.

Klay Thompson angry about Warriors looking into Kevin Love trade?

Thompson hit all 13 of his field-goal attempts in the third quarter of Friday night's game against the Kings, including nine 3-pointers. He actually hit a 10th 3-pointer near the end of the quarter that was waved off because of a foul. Thompson had to settle for two free throws to cap his period.

"I can't believe I own an NBA record," Thompson said in the post-game television interview, according to CBSSports.com. "It was crazy. I don't even know what happened."

What happened was that once he and the Warriors recognized what was happening to his shooting touch, they tried to get him the ball as often as possible in the third. And he shot every time he touched the ball.

The rest of the Warriors scored four of the team's 41 points in the quarter. Thompson started off the game going 3 of 9 from the floor in the first half.

He finished the game scoring 52 points on 16-of-25 shooting from the floor, 11-of-15 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc and 9-of-10 from the free-throw line. He also had five assists, four steals, two rebounds and two blocked shots.

The son of former NBA power forward Mychal Thompson, Klay Thompson raised his scoring average from 21.1 to 21.9 points per game. But he is averaging career highs in field-goal shooting (47.2 percent), 3-point shooting (44.4 percent) and free-throw shooting (86.8 percent).

That other Warriors guard, Stephen Curry, has his own followers as the game's most potent scorer. He is averaging 23.2 points per game on 50.1-percent shooting and 40.2-percent shooting from long distance.
