Jim Tomsula is filling out his staff as he transitions into his new role of San Francisco 49ers head coach following Jim Harbaugh's departure, and he's reportedly looking toward the college ranks for his offensive coordinator.

Alabama Crimson Tide Recruiting Update

Adam Schefter reported on Twitter over the weekend that Lane Kiffin, Nick Saban's offensive coordinator at Alabama, is a prime candidate to take over the Niners' play-calling duties.

The Best and Worst of the College Gridiron Season

He's not even 40, and Kiffin's already had quite a few 'second acts' in his coaching career. He secured head coaching jobs with the Oakland Raiders, Tennessee Volunteers, and USC Trojans, but flamed out in each position after a short period.

His first year as OC for the Crimson Tide, however, was a huge success. Quarterback Blake Sims broke the school's single-season passing yardage record, and wide receiver Amari Cooper was a Heisman finalist and projected top-ten pick in April's NFL draft. It's easy to see why he would be on the 49ers' radar.

Kiffin, however, seems happy in Tuscaloosa with Saban. “It’s been great. I should pay [Saban] for this opportunity, to be able to come in and learn from him," he said, via USA Today's For The Win. "You’re learning while he’s doing everything and that’s been awesome.”
